Hundreds more fled Myanmar, calling the ambassador to protest

Runaways have been sheltered at a school Mercy Bill Government Primary School on the Ukhia border.


In Myanmar, 114 more people have fled to Bangladesh since Tuesday morning in the ongoing conflict between the junta government army and rebel groups.


According to the scene, 110 of them are members of Border Guard Police-BGP. So far, more than two hundred BGP members have fled to Bangladesh. BGP members, army members, customs officials and various government officials of that country are fleeing to Bangladesh to save their lives after the fighting between the army and the armed groups including the Arakan Army in the Dhenkibunya area near the Myanmar-Bangladesh border.


The Border Guard Force of Bangladesh BGB confirmed this information to journalists. The BGB first disarmed them after they arrived at the Bangladesh border. Then moved to a safe place. Currently, BGP members from Myanmar and others are sheltered in a school Mercy Bill Government Primary School on the Ukhia border. Meanwhile, due to these incidents, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh has summoned the ambassador of Myanmar. There was discussion about taking back BGP and other Myanmar nationals.


Myanmar's military junta overthrew the democratic government in a military coup. After that, some armed groups, including the Arakan Army, are fighting against the junta government. Hundreds more have taken refuge from Myanmar, including government officials including the BGP.


Over two hundred sheltered in three days

For the past few days, firing and clashes between the Myanmar border guard forces and the Arakan Army have been going on inside Myanmar across the Ghumdhum border in Naikxyongchari upazila of Bandarban district and across the Ukhia and Teknaf borders in Cox's Bazar. In the face of fierce attacks by the rebels, BGP members started entering Bangladesh in stages from the morning of February 4 through the Tumbru border area of Naikshyongchari in Bandarban.


In the last three days, a total of 264 people, including members of Myanmar's border guarding force, have taken refuge in Bangladesh. More than two hundred of them are BGP members. Besides, there are government officials from various departments. BGB Ramur Sector Commander Mehdi Hasan confirmed this information. It is known that among the asylum seekers are ordinary Myanmar citizens including Myanmar BGP members, army personnel, customs officials.


BGB is working to identify them.

The BGB has also confirmed the deposit of arms and ammunition of the absconding BGP members. A BBC correspondent has learned that two women and a child are among those who have been given asylum.


Panic among locals

Due to the recent conflict situation in Myanmar, panic spread in the border areas of Bangladesh. Heavy gunfire and mortar shell explosions were heard from inside Myanmar across the border in Naikshyongchari, Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas from Monday evening till Tuesday morning.

Locals still report hearing such horrible noises from across the Betibuniya border every now and then. This has spread panic in the villages of the border areas of Bangladesh. Locals said they could not sleep for the last three nights due to fear. In the meantime, many have left the village. Local residents feel that the situation is constantly deteriorating as no one can stay, especially at night.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Border Guard Force (BGB) has asked the locals to stay safe, but most of them are not obeying their instructions. Many locals are crowding the school premises. Moving at will. Even, when BGP members came across the border on Tuesday morning, these locals were the first to rescue them. Some locals said they saw three dead bodies lying on the border line. But nobody can visit or bring them because they are on the border line. The identity of the bodies has not been confirmed yet.


Treatment of the wounded

Among the sheltered BGP members, seven more were injured. Earlier, 15 people were shot dead in the clash. Border Guard Force of Bangladesh arranged for treatment. Five of the injured are being treated at Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital. Four others have been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Currently, security has been increased in the border area, Bangladesh Border Guard said.


Summons and protest to the ambassador

Meanwhile, two people, including a Bangladeshi woman, were killed by a mortar shell fired from Myanmar at Jalpaitli border in Naikxyongchari upazila of Bandarban district of Bangladesh on Monday afternoon. Because of this, Bangladesh protested by summoning Myanmar's ambassador Aung Kyaw Moe on Tuesday. Mia Muhammad Mainul Kabir, Director General of the Myanmar Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs submitted a letter of protest to the Myanmar Ambassador. Bangladesh has expressed concern over the ongoing situation at the border. An explanation has been sought from the Myanmar ambassador for shelling on Bangladesh's own border. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the incident of Myanmar ammunition falling in Bangladesh is sad. Later, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Hasan Mahmood told reporters in his office that talks are going on between the two countries to send the fleeing BGP members and others back to their countries.


He said, "Bangladesh has uninterrupted communication with Myanmar. The State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar has contacted the ambassador of Bangladesh. They will take back their citizens. They will also take back their border guards."


Law Minister Anisul Haque said in the National Parliament on Monday that Bangladesh is closely monitoring the Myanmar border situation. At the same time, the armed forces at the border have been instructed to exercise patience.


Meanwhile, the refugee relief and repatriation commissioner (RRRC) of Cox's Bazar told the media that around 400 people from the Chakma community and some people from the Rohingya community have gathered in the intense conflict across the Ghumdhum border of Naikshyongchari upazila.
